Naptime - A Breakthrough

I have delayed writing this post for a quite a while, because Osian napping on his own was such a new and treasured thing I did not want to go blabbing about it on here and then jinx it all!

When Osian was about 6 weeks old, he stopped napping during the day. Once he was put down in his moses basket he would wake up within 5 minutes and wanted fed again. I didn't really know what to do so I just let him nap in my arms after falling asleep feeding. At the time he was so young that I didn't really mind. He slept for a few hours in his moses basket at night, and that was my main priority at the time. He was also feeding every hour or so during the day, I didn't mind him feeding and dozing off in my arms. If we were out and about he would sleep for longer in the car/pram, or just being in different places kept him a bit happier, and he went for longer periods without being fed.

For a quite few months Osian napped in my arms when we were in the house. Which worked well for quite a while. Until Osian got older and it got to a point where he wasn't napping very well. Plus I thought he needed to learn to sleep elsewhere, especially since he will be going to nursery, meaning he couldn't always get cuddled to sleep.

I really had no idea what to do, if I put him in his cot he was getting way too upset to sleep. I tried staying with him and stroking his face or patting his belly, but it just didn't work. He was just wanting picked up if I were there and was getting all the more worked up. I tired leaving him alone but that didn't work either. One day I decided to try him in the pram, because he slept quite well in the pram whilst we were out and about. I put the pram up and had him facing out the window. Which worked really well for a while, he would have a long nap and wake up happy. After a few weeks he didn't nap so well in the pram, and would cry before falling asleep, not sleep long then would wake up upset and tired.

At this point we finally managed to get Osian to go down in his cot happily at night and fall asleep completely on his own. So one day I decided to replicate what happens when it comes to bed time at nap time and try to see if he would nap in his cot. I put Osian's grobag on him, had the room dark, gave him his little blanket and put a night light on. Which seems to be working quite well, most days he crys when he first gets put down but once given his blanket and left alone he starts babbling to himself or playing with his blanket happily until he falls asleep. Other days it can be quite a battle to get him to sleep, but overall he naps WAY better than he used to.

He usually has two naps a day, one a few hours after he's woken up and another a few hours later. His naps can last anything from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

YAY, I have gone from having a baby who would only nap in my arms or outside the house to one that can nap in his cot. It's better for the both of us now, Osian gets a much better sleep during the day, and I have some time to get a few things done and have a few hot cups of teas. It's a win win situation.

  1. Perseverance paid off! Well done you! I'm definitely noticing Finley sleeping less in the day (unless held, as you say too!) and more in the night now so fingers crossed he follows in Osian's footsteps and settles himself into his own little routine :)

  3. Yay! Well done :-) One of the most daunting things for me as I approach motherhood is how to establish routines as Baby gets a bit older, so I like reading experiences of other mums xx #binkylinky
