Salt Dough Valentine's Gift

I decided to make a Valentine's day present this year, and seeing as I'm not a very creative person this was a big task for me.

My mum gave me the inspiration for this idea, I can't remember what she said exactly but it ended up giving me the idea to make a heart out of salt dough with Osian's hands printed in it.
I have never made salt dough before so I wasn't excepting it to come out very well, even though it is very simple I was expecting me to mess it up somehow.

Salt dough has the most simple recipe, the only ingredients you need are water, salt and flour. You also need a rolling pin, a bowl to mix in, a spoon to mix with and a baking tray.

You need a cup of salt, a cup of flour and half a cup of water. I decided to add a few drops of food colouring to the water.
Then you put all three ingredients into a bowl and start mixing, then mix mix mix until it's starting to stick together.

Once you've finished mixing its time to take the mixture out of the bowl and roll it up into a ball.

Not a very even ball!

I decided to put the dough on the baking tray and then roll it out. I did forget to put greaseproof paper down before putting the dough on though.

Then you use the rolling pin to flatten the dough, I tried my best to roll it into a heart shape, it came out ok consider I made it, but think anyone else could have done a better job.

I was quite pleased with the colour it came out.

Now it's time to do the handprint, I tried my best to keep Osian's hand still, he sort of cooperated.

Now you stick it in the oven for 2 hours on the lowest heat. Then you are finished!
Now's the time the greaseproof paper would have come in handy, otherwise you'll have to slice it away from the baking tray, which is what had to be done with mine.

I was loved how it came out, someone else could have probably done a better job but it was good for me and I'm very glad I give it a go.
